Welcome to xinjiangsolotravel.com — a practical, independent travel resource for anyone planning a self-drive or DIY trip across Xinjiang, China.

This site was built by travelers who keep coming back to Xinjiang. We do not run tours, sell packages, or take commissions from hotels. Our goal is simple: give you the route, timing, costs, and on-the-ground details that actually change a trip.

Who We Are

We are a small team of independent travel writers and researchers based in China. Between us, we have spent more than ten years traveling Xinjiang by rental car, train, bus, and motorcycle across every major region: the Tianshan corridor, the Taklamakan Desert edge, the Pamir Plateau, the Ili Valley, and the Altay Mountains.

The site is maintained by Karl Huang and a small group of contributors who update articles after each return trip. Routes are re-driven, accommodation options are re-checked, and prices are updated when we can verify them in person or through reliable local sources.

Our Experience on the Ground

Our guides are based on repeated field trips, not one-off visits. Examples of routes we have driven and documented include:

We note road conditions, permit requirements, fuel stops, accommodation quality, and seasonal closures as we find them. When something changes — a road closes, a ticket price jumps, a border area requires new paperwork — we update the relevant guide.
