Welcome to xinjiangsolotravel.com — a practical, independent travel resource for anyone planning a self-drive or DIY trip across Xinjiang, China. This site was built by travelers who keep coming back to Xinjiang. We do not run tours, sell packages, or take commissions from hotels. Our goal is simple: give you the route, timing, costs, and on-the-ground details that actually change a trip.
Who We Are
This site is edited and maintained by Karl Huang, an independent travel writer and researcher based in China. I started driving Xinjiang in 2016 and have since logged more than 40,000 km across the region by rental car, motorcycle, train, and bus. My routes cover every major area: the Tianshan corridor, the Taklamakan Desert edge, the Pamir Plateau, the Ili Valley, and the Altay Mountains.
I am joined by a small group of contributors — local drivers, bilingual researchers, and photographers — who help verify road conditions, accommodation options, and prices after each return trip. Every route in our guides has been driven or re-checked by someone on the team.
Our Experience on the Ground
Our guides are based on repeated field trips, not one-off visits. Routes we have driven and documented include:
- The Duku Highway (G217) across the Tianshan Mountains, from Dushanzi to Kuqa
- The Karakoram Highway from Kashgar to Tashkurgan and the Khunjerab Pass
- The Northern Xinjiang loop connecting Urumqi, Kanas, Hemu, Burqin, Yining, and the Sayram Lake area
- The Southern Xinjiang loop through Kashgar, Aksu, Korla, and Turpan
- Seasonal winter routes in the Altay region for snow landscapes and ice festivals
We note road conditions, permit requirements, fuel stops, accommodation quality, and seasonal closures as we find them. When something changes — a road closes, a ticket price jumps, a border area requires new paperwork — we update the relevant guide and add a date stamp.
