Long Downhill Braking and Tunnel Driving in Xinjiang: What Mountain Passes Really Demand

The first time I smelled my own brakes was on the descent off the Guozigou grade, dropping from the Sayram Lake plateau at roughly 2,070 m toward the Ili Valley floor near 700 m. Hot metal and something like scorched cloth. The pedal had gone slightly long. I pulled onto a wide shoulder behind two trucks that had clearly had the same idea, sat there for 20 minutes with the bonnet up, and thought about how badly I had misunderstood mountain driving.

That was six years and several thousand mountain kilometres ago. Xinjiang has taught me more about going downhill than any other place I have driven, because the descents here are long in a way that flatlanders do not expect. Not two kilometres of hairpins. Thirty kilometres of continuous grade, sometimes more, with heavy trucks crawling in the right lane and unlit tunnels punched straight through the ridgeline.

Here is what actually works on those roads, and what goes wrong when you get it wrong.

Why Xinjiang descents punish brakes so badly

Three things stack up here.

The vertical drops are enormous. The Duku Highway (G217) crosses the Haxilegen pass area at around 3,400 m and eventually delivers you to Kuqa at roughly 1,100 m. Over the 561 km route you climb and drop through several of those cycles. On the G218 through the Ili region and on the approach to Nalati you get the same profile in miniature, over and over.

The gradients run long rather than steep. A 6 to 8 percent grade sounds mild. Hold it for 25 km and your brakes have to absorb the potential energy of a two-tonne car falling 1,500 m vertically. Friction brakes turn that into heat, and heat has to go somewhere.

And the traffic is mixed. Coal and cargo trucks share these roads with tour buses and rental SUVs. Trucks descend at 25 to 40 km/h because they have no choice. You will be behind them, and the temptation to brake, dart out, overtake, brake again is exactly the behaviour that cooks a brake system.

Engine braking: the technique that makes all of this a non-issue

The core idea is simple. Let the engine hold the car back so the brakes only handle corners, not the whole descent.

The rule I actually use

Descend in the gear you would need to climb the same slope. If a grade would have you in second or third going up, use second or third coming down. Set the gear at the top, before speed builds, not halfway down when things are already moving.

In an automatic, that means moving the lever out of D. Most rental cars in Urumqi give you either an L position, an S position, a manual gate, or paddles. On a steep descent I drop to 3 and then to 2 as the grade steepens, aiming to hold 2,500 to 3,500 rpm and a speed that needs no brake at all on the straights. The engine note gets loud. That noise is the system working; it is not damage.

Braking in bursts, not in drags

The mistake almost everyone makes is riding the pedal with light continuous pressure. That keeps the pads in constant contact and never lets the discs shed heat. Far better: firm short applications to knock 15 km/h off before a corner, then fully off the pedal on the straight so air can cool the discs. Brake, release, coast on engine braking, brake again.

Aim for a speed you can hold with the gearbox alone. On the tightest Duku switchbacks that was around 30 km/h for me in second. On a broad expressway grade like Guozigou, third gear at 60 to 70 km/h with occasional dabs worked fine.

Electric and hybrid cars change the maths

If you are driving an EV, regenerative braking on maximum will hold most descents by itself, and you arrive at the bottom with more range than you started, which never stops being satisfying. Two warnings. Regen weakens once the battery is near full, so if you charged to 100 percent at the top of a pass you may get almost no engine-brake effect for the first 10 km. And in freezing conditions a cold battery limits regen too. Plan the charge to 80 or 85 percent before a big descent; you will thank yourself on the way down.

Brake fade: how to recognise it before it matters

Fade is what happens when pads, discs and brake fluid get hot enough to stop working properly. It arrives in stages, and the early signs are easy to miss if you have never felt them.

Smell first. A sharp, acrid, hot-metal odour. If you can smell brakes, you are already using them too much.

Then the pedal changes. It goes soft or travels further before biting. In severe cases the pedal sinks toward the floor because the fluid has boiled and there is vapour in the lines. Vapour compresses. Fluid does not.

Then the car simply does not slow the way you asked. That is the point where people crash.

What to do the moment you notice any of it: shift down immediately so the engine takes over, find the first safe wide shoulder or pull-off, and stop. Then leave the car alone. Do not touch the brake pedal while parked, use the handbrake if the ground is level or chock a wheel, and above all do not pour water on hot discs. Cold water on a 400 C disc can crack it. Twenty minutes of standing still is usually enough for a car; a truck needs far longer.

Once you are moving again, restart the descent in a lower gear than before. Runaway lanes are not decoration

On the longer graded sections you will pass gravel arrester beds branching uphill off the right side. They exist because trucks lose brakes here regularly. I have seen one in use, on the descent toward Yining: a cargo truck buried to the axles in gravel, driver standing beside it smoking, entirely calm. If you ever genuinely have nothing left, that gravel is your friend.

Trucks, jams and the 30-kilometre downgrade

The single most frustrating part of Xinjiang mountain driving is not the grade. It is the queue.

Heavy trucks descend slowly and they descend in convoys. On the Guozigou stretch of the G30 I have sat in a rolling procession at 30 km/h for the better part of an hour. On the Duku Highway during the short open season, roughly June through October, the mix of trucks, tour buses and self-drive tourists creates genuine congestion in places wide enough for exactly one and a half vehicles.

How I handle it:

Accept the truck’s pace and hold back. Sit four to six seconds behind, not two. That gap gives you sightlines, reaction time, and clean air. It also means you rarely have to brake, which is the whole point.

Overtake on the straights, never near a blind bend. If a truck is holding 30 km/h you need a genuinely long clear stretch, because your loaded rental crossing over on a mountain road is slower than you think. When in doubt, stay behind. You lose ten minutes.

Watch for the truck that is in trouble. Blue-grey smoke from the wheels, a driver hugging the shoulder, hazard lights on a downgrade. Give that vehicle enormous room and do not be alongside it.

Add time to your day, generously. The Duku Highway is 561 km and I have never done it in under 12 hours with photo stops; two days with a night in Bayanbulak is far more civilised. Tunnels: dark, wet, and full of diesel

The tunnels on these routes are not the illuminated, ventilated, three-lane affairs you get on a modern expressway. Some of them are single-tube bores with no lighting whatsoever, dripping water, with a rough surface and a fog of exhaust from the trucks ahead.

The two on the Duku Highway that everyone remembers are the Haxilegen tunnel, up at around 3,400 m near the highest point of the road, and the Yuxi Molgai tunnel in the central section. Both are short by expressway standards and both feel considerably longer than they are. I have driven Haxilegen in early July with snow banked on the roadside at the northern portal and water running across the tunnel floor.

What I do at every tunnel mouth

Sunglasses off before entering. Sounds trivial. Going from blazing high-altitude sun into an unlit bore with sunglasses on means five seconds of near-total blindness at 50 km/h. That is 70 metres of driving blind.

Headlights on low beam, always. Not just for you. Dipped beams let oncoming drivers place you. High beams in a dust-and-exhaust haze bounce straight back at you and make things worse.

Slow down before the portal, not inside it. Your eyes need three to five seconds to adjust. Enter 10 to 15 km/h slower than you were cruising and hold that until you can see the walls.

Switch the ventilation to recirculate. This is the one that makes the biggest difference to how you feel. Truck exhaust in an unventilated tunnel is thick enough to taste. Recirculate for the tunnel, then back to fresh air once you are out. On a day with many tunnels I toggle it a dozen times and it beats arriving in Kuqa with a diesel headache.

No overtaking, no stopping, no photos. There is no shoulder inside most of these bores. A stopped car in an unlit tunnel is close to invisible.

Expect water and expect ice. Groundwater seeps through the roof year-round. At 3,400 m that seepage freezes on the surface in shoulder season, and a patch of black ice in the dark on a downgrade is about the worst combination available. The altitude thing nobody warns you about

At 3,400 m a naturally aspirated engine has lost roughly a third of its power. Overtaking performance on the climb toward a high tunnel is nothing like what you have at sea level, and turbocharged cars feel laggy. Plan overtakes assuming the car is slower than it feels, because it is. Your own body is also working harder up there, so if you have come straight up from Urumqi that morning, expect to feel a little slower on the uptake too.

ABS on gravel is not the safety net you think

Plenty of Xinjiang’s best driving is on unsealed surfaces: the approach tracks to canyon rims, the last stretches to summer pastures, sections of road under repair on the G217. ABS behaves differently there and it surprises people.

On tarmac, ABS shortens stopping distances by preventing lockup. On loose gravel or deep dust, a locked tire actually builds a wedge of material in front of it that helps slow the car. ABS releases the brake to keep the wheel turning, which prevents that wedge from forming. The result is a stopping distance that can be noticeably longer on gravel than a driver used to sealed roads expects, with the pedal buzzing and juddering underfoot the whole time.

What that means in practice:

Halve your speed and double your following distance. On washboard gravel I stay under 40 km/h. Roughly 60 to 70 metres behind the vehicle ahead, partly for stopping room and mostly because their dust plume is a wall you cannot see through.

Brake in a straight line, before the corner, and coast through it. Braking and steering at once on gravel is how you understeer off the outside of a bend.

Let the pedal pulse. If ABS activates, keep firm pressure on and steer. Do not pump the pedal; the system does that far faster than your ankle can.

Use the gearbox on gravel descents too. Low gear, steady throttle, minimal braking. Same principle as tarmac, more so.

Remember gravel plus rain is worse than either alone. The top layer turns to slick clay in minutes. Small habits that have saved me repeatedly

Check the brake fluid before a mountain day. Old fluid absorbs moisture and boils at a lower temperature, which is precisely the failure mode you do not want on a 25 km descent. If a rental car has done 80,000 km and nobody can tell you when the fluid was last changed, drive it more conservatively.

Look at the pass profile before you start. I note where the summit sits and where the bottom sits, because knowing you have 1,400 vertical metres to lose changes how you set up at the top.

Top off fuel before a pass, not after. Fuel stations in mountain sections are sparse and some rural stations in Xinjiang require the driver to go inside with ID while an attendant fills the car. Add ten minutes for that ritual and factor it into the plan.

Turn the air conditioning off on a long climb if the temperature gauge starts creeping. Open the windows instead. Cooling systems out here work hard at altitude in July.

And take the pull-offs. The viewpoints on these roads exist because someone decided the view was worth stopping for, and stopping is also how brakes and nerves recover. My best hour on the Duku Highway was spent sitting on a rock above a valley at about 3,000 m eating dried apricots, waiting for a truck convoy to clear the switchbacks below.

The short version

Set your gear at the top of the descent, not partway down. Hold a speed the engine can manage on its own and use the brakes in short firm bursts with real gaps between them. If you smell hot brakes or the pedal goes long, downshift and stop for 20 minutes. Take sunglasses off and switch to recirculated air before every tunnel, run dipped headlights, and never overtake inside one. On gravel, cut your speed and expect longer stopping distances even with ABS.

Get those habits right and the long descents stop being the frightening part of a Xinjiang road trip. They become the part you look forward to, which is roughly how it should be when the road ahead drops 1,500 m through a mountain range and there is nothing in your mirrors but sky.
